In case you missed the announcement, earlier this month we started offering custom branded face masks here at Real Thread, which is about the most 2020 swag item you could imagine.

With this product launch came a lot of excitement, a lot of interest, and a lot of questions –– like “I can print on masks?” and “What are these made out of?” and “Do non-medical masks even do anything?”

These are all valid questions as the popularity of face masks (particularly custom ones) went from 0–100 in about a day or two. With that, we want to make sure you’re informed, so in this post we’ll cover different mask materials, the level of protection they provide, and best practices for printing on them.

Weird, we know. We’ve stuck to strictly upper-body apparel for a long time here at Real Thread, and if you would have asked me what products we’d be adding to our offering, custom face masks would have been pretty low on the list.

But hey, that’s what the time calls for, so we’re here to provide and serve however we can.

Will I be able to breathe well with a print on the mask?

Definitely.  At Real Thread, we’ve long-specialized in water-based printing, a style in which the ink dyes the fabric of the material, rather than sitting on top of it.

So, instead of leaving a thick, crunchy print, you won’t even be able to feel the print on the material, making it just as breathable as it would be if there was no print at all.

100%. All of the masks on our site are able to be washed and re-worn. However, two of them in particular –– the Tultex FM19 and the Allmask –– are our best options for reusable masks. Both have stitching around the edges that will make them last a long time.

The other mask on our site –– this one from Bella+Canvas –– doesn’t have any stitching on it, so even though it is washable and re-wearable, it won’t last as many wears as the material is bound to get stretched out and the edges a bit frayed.

Are fabric masks direct substitutes for medical-grade masks?

Fabric masks are not a 1-to-1 substitute for N95 medical-grade masks. However, with those masks in short supply, it’s best to save them for front line workers who are putting their health at risk daily. If you’re not a front line worker, we’d encourage opting for a washable, reusable fabric mask.

For most day-to-day uses like running to the grocery store or pharmacy, or working inside of a restaurant or a construction site, a washable mask will protect you and those around you quite well.

We have three masks on our website that are made out of three different materials.

The Tultex FM19 is made out of 100% cotton, the Bella+Canvas Daily Face Mask is made out of a polyester/cotton blend, and the Allmask is made out of a tri-blend (cotton, polyester, and rayon).

Is there a difference in the fabrics from a safety standpoint?

Research done by Cambridge University found that, while all of these, materials do help, 100% cotton fabric does the best job of filtering, and will be the most effective option of the three.

Are there any print specs or parameters to keep in mind while designing masks?

If you’re planning on printing front and center on a mask, the printable area will likely be about 3" x 3".

If you’re planning on printing elsewhere, like on the side closer to the top or bottom, the printable area is going to be smaller and somewhat dependent on the design. To get an expert eye on it, talk to our team.

The Bella 6400 has quickly become one of our most popular women’s cut t-shirts. Named the Relaxed Jersey Short Sleeve Tee, this shirt has a loose, relaxed fit compared to other women’s t-shirts, but still maintains a structure that makes it look put together, not sloppy.

It fits a wider variety of sizes and body types, so if you’re looking for a women’s shirt that works for everyone, this will be your best option.

When you check the tag on your t-shirt, it’s common to read Made in China or Made in Indonesia or maybe even Made in the USA. What’s not particularly common, though, is to read a name. But look on the inside of any shirt from Known Supply, and you’ll see names like Esther Barzola, Liz Aquino, or Vilma Bautista.

“If we can get people to understand that there’s a real person behind the product, we can change the way they think about purchasing,” says Travis Hartanov, co-founder of Known Supply.

Known Supply was started by two lifelong friends, Travis Hartanov and Kohl Crecelius. The two got started in the fashion and apparel industry roughly 12 years ago when they started a brand called Krochet Kids, a similar concept where they employed impoverished women in Peru and Uganda to produce crocheted goods like beanies, clothing, etc.

“10 years into Krochet Kids, we had the itch to kind of say, ‘what’s next?’ And there’s this gap in the market for ethically made apparel, and we thought we could fill it” says Travis.

With an idea and a mission, Travis and Kohl set off to change the apparel industry for the better.

For Travis and Kohl, the mission of Known Supply was always clear: Humanizing the apparel industry.

How do they do this? By empowering both the people who make the apparel, and the people who purchase it.

In an age where so many things are automated, it’s easy to forget that, largely, apparel is still very much a manual process. There are large facilities with sophisticated machinery, but much of the real work is still done by hand

That said, there are a lot of clothing manufacturers who either pay poor wages to workers in countries overseas, or contract out factories to produce their goods and turn a blind eye towards the working conditions.

“People can buy a shirt and read a snippet about who made my shirt and realize that they’re very similar to me. They’re trying to support a family and, you know, put food on the table just like I am in America,” says Travis.

It’s that human connection that the team at Known Supply hopes will inspire buyers to change the way they think about purchasing.

“If customers understand who’s behind their apparel and start demanding better quality tees, that’s what it takes to increase the standards for everybody in the game,” says Travis.

Spring is an exciting time in fashion and apparel. Sick of Winter, most people have spent the past couple of months dreaming of warmer weather and the clothes they’ll be wearing with it.

After browsing through countless new garment styles, there are a couple of major trends we noticed in each manufacturer’s Spring lines.

The first major t-shirt and apparel trend we noticed was a lot of new crop top garments available for printing. Whether they’re t-shirts, sweaters, or hoodies, it seems like almost every apparel manufacturer is creating a crop-top version of their classic garments.

Highlighting the best new spring garments for your custom t-shirt and apparel projects. 

One of the coolest things about t-shirts is their ability to unite people together. When you put on a t-shirt with a shared design, color, or slogan, you’re unifying yourself with a cause or company, and the tribe of people who are doing the same.

This is something that the team at BIGEYE, an integrated advertising agency in Orlando, FL, understands well. This week, we had the chance to catch up with our friend LeAnne Ball, Agency Marketing Specialist at BIGEYE, to get the inside scoop on how they’re using t-shirts to unite their team of interns and make them feel at home.

Q: It seems like, at BIGEYE, you all take interns pretty seriously. How many intern classes do you take on each year, and how many interns are in each class?

A: We do take our internship program very seriously and have worked hard to grow it over the last 2 years. We do 1 class a semester, so 3 a year. Depending on the need of each department and the candidates we get determines the number of interns each semester. Normally we range anywhere from 8–12 interns.

Q: What made you all decide to put such a heavy emphasis on your intern program?

A: When I first started at BIGEYE we had a program that only one person in the office was running. We had maybe 5–6 interns a semester, but there was no consistency, true organization, or solid “program” so to speak. Within the first couple of months being at BIGEYE I offered to jump in and help the person running it in efforts to take things off of her plate. I’ve had tons of experience working with students, so it felt natural.

Like many of our employees, as students, we had good and bad experiences, and we don’t ever want BIGEYE to be a bad experience. It’s part of our job as a community to help groom, grow, and teach the youth — so hopefully, even if in a small way, we can be a part of that.

Q: What’s your biggest goal for your internship program when it comes to BIGEYE itself?

A: We want our interns to leaving having a full grasp of what real agency life is like. So many students tour office spaces with school groups and see the “cool” office space agencies have. “You get to wear jeans? Okay, I want to work there!” Is something you hear a lot more often than you’d think.

We want to help them understand that while our dress attire isn’t corporate and our office space is “cool”, we are still a business. We have deadlines, responsibilities, etc. Each intern should understand the ins and outs of their department, but also understand at least 10% of all the others in the agency to help them learn how we all work together.

Q: How about your biggest goal in terms of what each intern will get from their experience?

A: Our goal is that by the end of each semester an intern has a better direction on what type of career they want. Maybe they learn while they are here they don’t want to be on an account team, but they saw/got to know the social interns so they want to try that for their next internship somewhere else.

Q: How does having such a large group of young 20-somethings affect culture in the office?

A: It definitely keeps things poppin’ and keeps the “older” employees young but I think having a handful of 20-somethings in a working environment with their hands-on real-time projects gives them a sense of contribution. They aren’t just fetching coffee, they are working on client projects alongside the employees. In a way, it lifts their maturity and shows them how to juggle the appropriate times to joke and the appropriate times to hustle.

Q: From the outside, it seems like BIGEYE puts a pretty heavy emphasis on company culture — what are some of the things you guys do as a company to cultivate a strong culture?

A: It’s a trade secret. Just kidding! Our Management team does a fantastic job of taking care of our staff. Whether that’s with a day off on their birthday, or a lunch in celebration of a life event, or just an office happy to get people away from their desks one hour earlier. BIGEYE is like a family!

Q: What are some of the things you do to make your interns feel at home and a part of the team?

A: We have a couple of events throughout the semester that we do to help the interns grow, but to also allow them to mingle with our office staff outside of the office. A lot of times the intimidation comes from being in an office space — which isn’t an environment they are used to, so we try to break that down by creating time to get to know them and break the ice, as well as allow them to join certain team outings.

Q: What made you choose t-shirts as a gift to the interns?

A: We’ve given BIGEYE t-shirts to interns before as a swag item to either welcome them to the team or to send them off at the end of the semester, but we wanted to do something that was more specific to them and made them feel important.

Q: How was your experience working with Real Thread? And how’s the final product?

A: Real Thread has been incredible. The team delivered a fantastic customer experience. Everyone was very personable, quick to respond (made me feel like I was your only client — which is a great feeling), and the logistics of my order was seamless. 10/10 would recommend. :)
